What worked
Zume's engineering team built genuinely novel hardware — delivery trucks with onboard ovens designed to finish baking a pizza during the drive to a customer's door — sophisticated enough that it became one of the largest bets in SoftBank's Vision Fund food-tech portfolio and pulled in Zynga's former studio president to help run it.
What didn't work

Zume spent hundreds of millions of dollars building and operating a fleet of custom robotic pizza trucks before it had proven the format actually worked better than a normal delivery driver — the onboard ovens frequently failed to fully cook pizzas during transit

Unit economics deteriorated
The economics of a custom hardware fleet never came close to profitability.

Runway ran out
In 2020 the company abandoned pizza-making entirely, laid off more than 500 employees including its whole robotics and delivery teams, and pivoted into selling compostable food packaging — a business with little connection to its original technology and already crowded with established players — before running out of cash and shutting down in June 2023.
